Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Sumter County Schools will transition from a required uniform policy to an optional uniform model. Students may continue wearing traditional school uniforms; however, uniforms will no longer be mandatory.
Students choosing to wear uniforms may wear:
* Polo-style shirts in white, red, black, or striped combinations
* Khaki, blue, or black pants or skirts
* Dresses and skirts that are fingertip length or longer
* Safe and secure footwear appropriate for school
Regardless of whether students choose to wear uniforms, all students must follow the district’s dress code expectations. Clothing must be clean, neat, appropriately fitted, and must fully cover the torso, back, and undergarments.
The following items are not permitted:
* Leggings, yoga pants, and skinny jeans
* Clothing with holes, rips, or tears
* Spaghetti straps or strapless tops
* Sheer or see-through clothing
* Clothing that exposes the midriff, chest, or back
* Pajamas or sleepwear
* House slippers, slides, or flip flops
* Hats, bonnets, hoodies, scarves, or head coverings worn inside the building (except for religious observance)
* Oversized jewelry
* Clothing displaying drugs, alcohol, profanity, pornography, hate speech, or illegal activity
Additional information regarding dress code expectations for the upcoming school year will be shared with parents and students prior to the start of school.
